Nagpur: A festive gathering at the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) office, belonging to the Ajit Pawar faction, has turned into a political controversy after a video of a dance performance during a ‘Diwali Milan’ event went viral on social media. What was meant to be a celebratory occasion has now sparked criticism, prompting party leaders to issue explanations and demand accountability.
Following the incident, NCP State General Secretary and MLA Shivajirao Garje issued a show-cause notice to Nagpur District President Anil Ahirkar, citing potential damage to the party’s image and seeking clarification over the viral clip.
In response, women office-bearers of the party addressed a press conference on Tuesday, accusing certain media outlets of misrepresenting the event and sensationalizing the video for political purposes.
“It was a family-like Diwali celebration at our office,” clarified NCP Nagpur City Women’s Wing President Sunita Yerne. She explained that the performance was by a woman member who is a professional Lavani dancer, and the act was part of a talent showcase among party members.
Yerne further alleged that parts of the media deliberately aired the clip under misleading titles such as “Lavani Dance in NCP Office” and “Mala Jau Dya Na Ghari,” portraying the event in a negative light. “The woman’s dignity was ignored, and the video was circulated with distorted context. It seems like a deliberate attempt to malign our party ahead of the elections,” she said.
The incident has led to internal discussions within the party, with senior NCP leaders urging restraint and decorum, while the local unit maintains that the controversy is a result of media misrepresentation rather than misconduct.
What began as a festive Diwali get-together has now snowballed into a political storm, reflecting the heightened sensitivities within the NCP ahead of the upcoming polls.
