Nagpur: Panic broke out on Saturday morning after an ST bus filled with passengers suddenly began emitting thick smoke near the DCP Zone-2 office in Nagpur. The incident, suspected to have been caused by a short circuit, led to chaos as frightened commuters scrambled to safety — some even jumping out of the bus windows to save their lives.
According to eyewitnesses, the bus was en route from Nagpur when smoke started billowing inside due to an electrical malfunction. The driver acted swiftly, pulling the vehicle over to the roadside and switching off the engine. Within moments, passengers rushed out in panic, with a few leaping out of windows to escape the suffocating smoke.
Fortunately, no injuries or casualties were reported, and a major disaster was narrowly avoided. After the fire was brought under control, officials inspected the vehicle’s electrical system and confirmed that a short circuit was the likely cause of the incident.
Following the episode, the Divisional Transport Officer ordered the bus to be returned to the depot for a detailed technical examination.
Authorities praised the driver’s quick thinking and the alertness of local residents, which helped prevent what could have been a serious accident, saving the state transport bus—often fondly called the “Lal Pari”—from turning into ashes.
