Nagpur witnessed a sudden shift in weather conditions on Sunday night, forcing two IndiGo Airlines flights to divert to alternate airports after strong winds made landing unsafe.
As per airport authorities, IndiGo flight 6E-7543 from Hyderabad was redirected to Raipur, while flight 6E-486 from Bengaluru was diverted to Bhopal. The situation unfolded around 7 p.m. when dark clouds gathered over the city, followed by a spell of heavy rain and gusty winds.
The Hyderabad-bound flight attempted to land around 8:30 p.m., but the pilot decided to divert after observing severe crosswinds that posed a threat to landing stability. Simultaneously, the Bengaluru flight also encountered similar wind turbulence and was rerouted to Bhopal as a safety measure.
Airport officials explained that strong wind patterns significantly affect landing safety. A tailwind—blowing from behind—increases an aircraft’s ground speed, while a headwind—approaching from the front—creates resistance. Both can challenge a pilot’s control during descent and often lead to diversions.
Sources confirmed that intense tailwinds over Nagpur made it difficult to manage speed, prompting pilots to prioritize safety despite clear visibility.
This incident comes just a week after an Air India flight to Delhi was forced to return to Nagpur due to a suspected bird strike. With Sunday’s weather-related diversions, it marks the second major disruption to flight operations at Nagpur Airport within a short period.
Strategically located at India’s geographical centre, Nagpur Airport is a vital hub for both passenger and cargo traffic. It serves as a convergence point for major domestic and international routes linking Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Bengaluru, and Hyderabad.
Equipped with an extended runway, advanced air traffic control systems, and modern infrastructure, Nagpur Airport is counted among the safest in the country. Situated close to the city’s railway station, its central location reinforces Nagpur’s status as one of India’s most important transportation hubs.
