In a significant move to transform Nagpur’s southern industrial landscape, the Nagpur Metropolitan Region Development Authority (NMRDA) has proposed a 217.33-hectare Defence Industrial Zone in Mouza Shiwa and Sawanga, under Nagpur (Rural) taluka.
The proposal seeks to convert agricultural land into an industrial hub for defence equipment and component manufacturing, marking one of the first such zones in Vidarbha.
Submitted under Section 37(1) of the Maharashtra Regional and Town Planning (MRTP) Act, 1966, the proposal awaits approval from the State Urban Development Department.
Documents reveal that Eminent Expressway Pvt. Ltd., Nagpur, has put forth the plan, covering land parcels in Shiwa (Khasra Nos. 60, 68, 80, 92/2) and Sawanga (Khasra Nos. 203 to 326 and adjoining plots).
As the site partly overlaps the Defence Zone, the NMRDA has recommended a full technical review by the Town Planning Directorate before public notification.
The purpose, stated in official papers, is to permit the establishment of “industries for the manufacturing of defence-related equipment and allied products.”
Ownership includes government (Budki Jamin) and private land, held by Eminent Expressway Pvt. Ltd., Shyam Sundar Mundhe, and Deepak Mahadevrao Madavi.
Located along the Nagpur–Deoli corridor, the proposed zone adjoins existing defence establishments, aligning with Maharashtra’s policy to promote strategic and defence-linked industrial growth around Nagpur.
