The Nagpur Metropolitan Region Development Authority (NMRDA) has initiated the process to transfer 60.16 hectares of land to the State Home Department (Prisons) for building a new Nagpur Central Jail, marking a major step toward shifting the century-old prison from Wardha Road near Rahate Colony Square to a new site on the outskirts.
As per official documents, the new location spans Mouza Chicholi and Mouza Tandulwadi in Kamptee taluka, covering Survey Nos. 131, 140, 66, 69, 75, and 77. Of the total land, 57.12 hectares will be used for the jail complex, while 3.04 hectares will be reserved for roads and supporting infrastructure.
The transfer is being executed under the Disposal of Land Regulation, 2019, which allows such allocations for public-purpose projects with state approval. The plan has been cleared by the Divisional Commissioner’s office and the Urban Development Department, and awaits final sanction from the Government of Maharashtra before handover to the Prisons Department.
The new complex, spread across 150 acres, will house over 2,000 inmates and feature modern facilities including digital court links, rehabilitation blocks, staff quarters, and green buffers.
Meanwhile, the relocation has unlocked the redevelopment potential of the existing Wardha Road site. Union Minister Nitin Gadkari has proposed transforming it into a modern civic and commercial hub with public spaces, markets, gardens, and parking, while shifting FCI godowns to the outskirts.
Officials said the move will modernize correctional infrastructure while reshaping central Nagpur’s urban landscape.
