The OBC (women) category — once the backbone of Nagpur’s civic politics — has retained its 20 reserved seats in the 2025 Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) reservation draw, mirroring 2017’s count. But beneath the unchanged numbers lies a dramatic political churn, with eight sitting OBC women corporators losing their wards and eight new areas coming under the OBC (women) quota — effectively redrawing half the city’s OBC political landscape.
Key OBC women-dominated wards such as 6B, 17B, 24B, 27B, 28B, 30B, 33B, and 37B have now been converted into OBC (open) seats. These areas, once dominated by BJP and BSP corporators, were crucial grassroots zones powered by welfare-driven female leadership. Now, with the gender tag gone, leaders like Vandana Chandekar (6B), Lata Kadgaye (17B), Sarita Kaware (24B), Rita Mule (30B), Divya Dhurde (27B), Manglabai Gawre (28B), Bharati Bunde (33B), and Sonali Kadu (37B) lose their gender-based advantage — and face open competition against male contenders.
Meanwhile, the 2025 reshuffle introduces eight new OBC (women) wards — 9B, 10C, 12C, 13C, 20C, 29C, 36B, and 38B. The flip side: these were previously held by men. BJP corporators Sanjay Burrewar (9B), Nitish Gwalbansi (10C), Harish Gwalbanshi (12C), Ramesh Punekar (20C), and Bhagwan Mendhe (29C) are now disqualified from contesting, as their seats have rotated to women-only categories.
While the OBC tally remains 40 seats — including 20 for women, the power centres have shifted south and east, from traditional BJP strongholds like Mangalwari and Lakadganj to newer growth zones such as Hudkeshwar, Nandanvan, and Wathoda.
For the BJP, which had won 16 of these 20 seats in 2017, the shake-up means a massive candidate reshuffle and the loss of well-established female faces. The Congress, on the other hand, sees fresh openings to project new women candidates where the BJP’s local machinery is unsettled.
The quota count may be unchanged — but the faces, wards, and political equations of Nagpur’s OBC (women) power map have been turned upside down.
