Nagpur: A funeral ceremony turned fatal at Wathoda crematorium when a sudden flare-up from the pyre left a 64-year-old man dead and four family members injured on Saturday.
Complainant Saket Anil Gedam (36) told police that he and his relatives had gathered to perform the last rites of Sushilabai Haribhau Munghate (83). During the process, Saket’s uncle Vinod Pundlikrao Munghate (64) was standing close to the pyre when diesel was poured to intensify the flames, triggering an unexpected fire burst.
The blaze engulfed Vinod and four other relatives, causing severe burn injuries. All were rushed to GMCH for treatment, and Vinod was later shifted to Orange City Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries on November 19 at around 10 am.
Wathoda Police have registered an Accidental Death Report (ADR) and are examining how the fire intensified during the cremation. Further investigation is underway.
