Nagpur: A routine intervention in a minor fight between two students at a Kamptee-based pharmacy college has led New Kamptee Police to uncover a troubling WhatsApp group where teenagers were imitating the behaviour of the Lawrence Bishnoi gang, sharing details of online weapon deals and circulating obscene videos.
The discovery was made after Police Inspector Mahesh Andhale examined the phones of the teens involved in the scuffle. Officers found a group comprising 24 minors, all aged between 16 and 17, who were regularly joining video calls and discussing issues ranging from personal disputes to accessing weapons online. Police termed the activity “highly unusual and deeply concerning.”
Inspector Andhale said that idolising criminal figures has become common due to sensationalised social media content, but the nature of this group’s discussions raised serious alarm. “I counselled each one of them. They come from lower middle-class families and needed to be reminded about their responsibilities and the opportunities ahead of them,” he said.
All 24 minors were summoned along with their parents for counselling. Andhale added that under Operation Thunder, police are also mandated to identify and address behavioural issues among youth. “If this group had continued unchecked, it could have damaged multiple promising futures. Guiding these youngsters now is crucial,” he noted.
Police Redirect Teens With New Educational Initiative
After dismantling the unlawful WhatsApp group, New Kamptee Police have created a new group aimed at instilling positive values. Head Constable Dipti Motghare will oversee the platform, where the same 24 teenagers will be asked to study the life of a freedom fighter and present their learnings to officers at the police station.
Zone 6 Deputy Commissioner of Police Dr. Sandeep Pakhale has praised the initiative, calling it a meaningful effort to guide vulnerable youth away from harmful influences and towards constructive pursuits.
