The Nagpur Metropolitan Region Development Authority (NMRDA) has submitted a proposal seeking permission to utilise Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) funds from industries for development works across the metropolitan region. Prepared under the Maharashtra Metropolitan Region Development Act, the proposal highlights that despite industries contributing sizeable CSR amounts annually, NMRDA has not received approvals to implement CSR-funded projects for several years, including 2024–25.
Industries operating within NMRDA limits are mandated to allocate part of their profits to CSR, and many are willing to support regional development. However, the absence of a clear mechanism and delays in government permissions have left substantial CSR funds—both new and unspent—lying idle. Officials note that this gap has stalled multiple planned works even as the metropolitan region continues to expand rapidly.
For 2024–25 and 2025–26, NMRDA has proposed deploying CSR funds for essential civic upgrades, public amenities and infrastructure improvements that directly benefit both local communities and industrial establishments. The authority has requested approval to use CSR money already received as well as future allocations, stressing the need for timely clearance so that development works can begin without further delay.
If sanctioned, the move could unlock significant CSR resources and accelerate metropolitan-level development. The proposal now awaits government approval.
