A decision by the Physical Education Board of Rashtrasant Tukadoji Maharaj Nagpur University (RTMNU) to discontinue eight sports triggered chaos at the Senate meeting on Friday. Members said that while the government is promoting sports through various competitions, the university is shutting down opportunities for its own students. They argued that this move has taken away students’ chance to represent the university at national-level events.
The eight discontinued sports are mini golf, skating, karate, rugby, wushu, floorball, canoeing-kayaking and woodball. Members questioned why sports in which RTMNU had strong chances of winning medals were specifically removed. The administration claimed there were not enough student participants in these activities. Earlier, after objections were raised, former vice chancellor Dr. Siddharthvinayak Kane had cancelled the decision and restored all sports.
During the meeting, Dr. Ajay Chavan alleged that the board had attached a fake letter showing approval from the Management Council. Former council member Vishnu Changde confirmed that no such approval was ever given. Following demands from members, vice chancellor Dr. Manali Kshirsagar ordered the formation of an inquiry committee. Legislators Sanjay Meshram and Dr. Ashish Deshmukh were also present during the meeting.
