With just two weeks remaining for the New Year, celebrations are already being planned across Maharashtra. However, those intending to celebrate with alcohol should exercise caution, as the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) is now in effect following the announcement of municipal corporation elections.
On Monday, the State Election Commission announced elections for 29 municipal corporations, including Mumbai, Thane, Pune, Nagpur, and Nashik. Polling will be held on January 15, with results declared on January 16. The MCC will remain in force until then, imposing strict guidelines across the state.
Restrictions and Vigilance
Under the MCC, rallies, meetings, and processions are restricted. Authorities have also intensified vigilance against illegal liquor sale and consumption, particularly in anticipation of New Year’s Eve celebrations.
The State Excise Department has placed dhabas, hotels, resorts, and highway establishments under special surveillance. Any illegal activity involving alcohol during New Year’s Eve may attract strict legal action.
Unauthorized Liquor Parties to Invite Action
Liquor sale or consumption is permitted only at licensed premises. Serving or consuming alcohol without authorization—at private parties, dhabas, or hotels—is illegal. In the past, complaints have been reported from regions including Pune Rural, Thane, Nashik, and Solapur. This year, authorities have made it clear that no leniency will be shown.
Penalties for Sellers and Consumers
- Unauthorized sale of liquor: Owners of hotels or dhabas can be booked under the Prohibition Act, with fines ranging from ₹5,000 to ₹25,000.
- Illegal consumption: Individuals may face fines between ₹1,000 and ₹5,000, and in some cases, arrest.
Online Liquor Permit Available
To facilitate legal celebrations, the State Excise Department has introduced an online liquor consumption permit for just ₹1. Citizens planning New Year’s Eve parties are advised to obtain this permit to avoid legal issues.
Special Enforcement Squads
Special squads have been deployed to monitor illegal liquor sale, transport, and storage during the MCC and New Year period. Suspicious activities can be reported on the toll-free number 1800 233 9999 or via WhatsApp at 8422001133.
Celebrate Responsibly
While New Year’s Eve is a time for joy, adhering to the law is crucial. With strict enforcement in place, celebrating responsibly and within legal limits is the safest choice—ensuring momentary fun does not lead to serious legal trouble.
