In a strong deterrent against habitual drunk and dangerous driving, the Nagpur City Police have secured a rare conviction under their ongoing road safety enforcement drive, Operation U Turn. A repeat offender has been sentenced to simple imprisonment by the Motor Vehicle Court, Nagpur, sending out a stern warning to traffic violators.
As per the order passed on December 16, 2025, by the Judicial Magistrate First Class (Motor Vehicle Court), Nagpur, the accused was convicted under Section 184 (dangerous driving), Section 185 (driving under the influence of alcohol), and Section 3/181 (driving without a valid driving licence) of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, read with Section 275 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023.
Court records revealed that the accused had earlier been prosecuted and convicted in 2017 for offences under Sections 184 and 185 of the Motor Vehicles Act. Despite the earlier conviction, the accused again indulged in drunk driving. During the latest incident, medical examination confirmed 113.03 mg of alcohol per 100 ml of blood, far exceeding the permissible limit. It was also established that the accused was driving without a valid licence.
Taking into account the repeated nature of the offence, the high level of intoxication, and the serious threat posed to public safety, the court refused to grant leniency. The accused was sentenced to 14 days of simple imprisonment for offences under Sections 184 and 185, and 10 days of simple imprisonment for the offence under Section 3/181. All sentences are to run concurrently, resulting in an effective jail term of 14 days.
Police officials termed the conviction a significant achievement under Operation U Turn, highlighting the seriousness with which repeat drunk driving cases are being handled. The Nagpur City Police reiterated their zero-tolerance policy against drunk and dangerous driving and appealed to citizens to strictly follow traffic rules to ensure safer roads.
