Beware! Lighting up in public could now land you in legal trouble, as Bajaj Nagar police have stepped up action against public smoking along one of Nagpur’s busiest roads.
What was earlier ignored is now under close watch. Over the past few days, police personnel have been seen stopping youngsters and issuing challans to those smoking openly on Central Bazaar Road, especially along the Plaza Street stretch between Bajaj Nagar Square and VNIT. The area, frequented by commuters and evening walkers, has emerged as a key focus of the crackdown.
Police officials said the drive was launched following repeated complaints from residents and continued observation of people smoking in crowded public places. Several violators have been booked under Sections 103 and 117 of the Mumbai Police Act, with challans requiring them to appear before a court, indicating the seriousness of the offence.
However, the strict enforcement has also raised concerns. Some penalised individuals claimed that in a few cases they were asked to pay ₹100 or ₹200 on the spot.
