With the Nagpur Municipal Corporation elections scheduled for January 15 and counting on January 16, the civic administration has reiterated that election duty is mandatory for all staff assigned to the process. NMC Commissioner and Administrator Dr Abhijeet Chaudhari has warned that employees attempting to avoid election-related responsibilities will face strict disciplinary action and, if necessary, criminal proceedings.
The civic body said the nomination process began on December 23 and will continue until December 30, with nomination forms being accepted at the offices of Election Decision Officers established in each civic zone. Officers and employees from various government and semi-government departments have been deployed to ensure smooth conduct of the polls.
The NMC has deployed around 15,000 officers and employees for election duty, and official deployment orders have already been issued. For the city polls, 3,004 polling stations have been finalised. Each polling station will be staffed by one presiding officer and three polling officers, ensuring four officials per booth.
Election personnel will undergo three rounds of mandatory training, with the first session scheduled for December 28 at locations fixed by Election Decision Officers. Training will cover polling procedures, legal provisions and handling of Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs). Additional officials have been appointed for sector duties, expenditure monitoring and SST–VST squads.
Referring to past experience, the Commissioner said refusal of duty, absence from training or negligence during election work would attract action under State Election Commission directives of 1995 and 2018, and appealed to staff to cooperate for peaceful and transparent elections.
