The Nagpur Metropolitan Region Development Authority (NMRDA) has finalised a 120-metre right of way (ROW) for its ambitious Outer Ring Road (ORR) project, marking a major planning milestone for the high-capacity bypass proposed around Nagpur and its fast-growing metropolitan region.
Officials said the 120-metre width has been locked in after detailed assessments of long-term traffic growth, future infrastructure needs and urban expansion, with the objective of avoiding repeated land acquisition at later stages. The wide corridor is designed to accommodate multiple carriageways, service roads on both sides, green buffers and scope for future transport systems as mobility patterns evolve.
A key feature of the ORR alignment is a grade-separated crossing over the Samruddhi Mahamarg. Since the expressway is a fully access-controlled, high-speed corridor, crossings at ground level are not permitted. To address this, NMRDA has proposed a dedicated flyover exclusively for ORR traffic, ensuring uninterrupted movement on both routes.
Officials noted that while Samruddhi Mahamarg has multiple interchanges, this will be the first instance of a newly planned metropolitan ring road being carried across the expressway through a standalone flyover structure. The design aims to preserve expressway safety and speed standards while enabling seamless orbital movement around the city.
Beyond traffic lanes, the ROW also includes utility corridors for water supply, sewerage, gas pipelines, power cables and optical fibre, along with service roads to handle local traffic and maintenance needs without disrupting through traffic.
