Raised in the digital age, Generation Z proved in 2025 that online outrage can fuel real-world action. Across continents, young people transformed social media-driven anger into mass street protests, unsettling governments and forcing political turning points.
From Nepal and Madagascar to Morocco and Mexico, youth-led movements surged, challenging authority and pushing issues of accountability and governance into the national spotlight.
Nepal
In September, Nepal saw sweeping protests after the government banned several major social media platforms. Young demonstrators accused authorities of stifling free expression, and sustained pressure ultimately led to the prime minister’s removal—one of the year’s most striking examples of Gen Z’s political influence.
Madagascar
In late September and October, protests in Madagascar erupted over persistent water and electricity shortages. The demonstrations quickly grew into a wider anti-government movement. Tensions escalated when reports emerged that parts of the army refused to fire on protesters. As unrest intensified, President Andry Rajoelina fled the country in mid-October.
Morocco
Moroccan youth organised digitally under the banner “Gen Z 212,” mobilising against rising living costs, unemployment and deteriorating public services. Online platforms were key to coordinating protests and amplifying their demands nationwide.
Mexico
In Mexico City, mid-November protests drew thousands of young people, alongside older allies, after the killing of a local mayor. Demonstrators called for action on crime, corruption and impunity. Some protests turned violent, with clashes between police and protesters leaving dozens injured.
Despite differing local triggers, a shared pattern emerged: a digitally native generation using online networks, symbols and hashtags to turn local grievances into broader debates on governance and opportunity. Even amid bans and crackdowns, protests spread rapidly.
Whether this surge of Gen Z activism will bring lasting political change remains unclear. With elections looming in countries like Nepal in 2026, the global impact of this youth-driven momentum is likely to stay firmly in focus.
