With the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) General Elections 2025–26 approaching, the civic administration has stepped up voter awareness initiatives under the Systematic Voters’ Education and Electoral Participation (SVEEP) programme, focusing on greater citizen and youth engagement.
As part of the campaign, selfie points have been installed at prominent public locations across the city to encourage people to participate actively in the electoral process. One such selfie point at Futala Lake was inaugurated on Thursday by NMC Commissioner and Administrator Dr Abhijeet Chaudhari. On the occasion, Dr Chaudhari took a selfie and appealed to citizens, particularly first-time and young voters, to exercise their franchise in large numbers.
The event was attended by Additional Commissioners Vasumana Pant and Vaishnavi B, Deputy Commissioners, SVEEP Nodal Officer Dr Ranjana Lade, RTM Nagpur University NSS Director Sopan Dev Pise, Public Relations Officer Manish Soni, Sports Officer Dr Piyush Ambulkar, SVEEP Coordinator Sushant Chimankar, Social Development Department officials Rajesh Meshram and Vinay Tembhurne, along with NSS students from Nagpur Veterinary College, NMC officials, staff and a large number of youths.
Addressing the gathering, Dr Chaudhari urged voters to verify their polling booth details and voter information through the Election Commission’s official website. He noted that Futala Lake saw heavy footfall on New Year’s Day, with many citizens stopping at the selfie points to click pictures with family and friends.
To widen outreach across all zones, selfie points are being set up at Reshimbagh Chowk (Central Nagpur), Ambedkar Garden (East Nagpur), Vivekananda Memorial (South-West Nagpur), Futala Lake (West Nagpur), Jhulelal Park (North Nagpur) and Gandhibagh Garden (Central Nagpur). Citizens have been encouraged to share their selfies on social media and tag the NMC’s official Instagram handle, @nmcngp.
Polling for the NMC elections is scheduled on January 15, from 7.30 am to 5.30 pm. Under the SVEEP campaign, voter outreach activities will continue until January 13 and include voter awareness vans, campus connect programmes, ‘Walk with Voters’, bike rallies, human chains and balloon festivals during Makar Sankranti.
Earlier, capitalising on the festive season, the NMC had also launched a Santa Claus-themed voter awareness drive at 40 locations across the city during Christmas to promote electoral participation.
