Nagpur’s little ones may soon hear the cheerful chug of the beloved Vanbala toy train once again. On Wednesday, the Maharashtra Government informed the Nagpur Bench of the Bombay High Court that the iconic train at Seminary Hills will be redeveloped along the lines of Mumbai’s popular Vanrani toy train, offering a refreshed, modern experience for families.
Officials explained that the existing Vanbala train had become irreparable due to repeated breakdowns and ageing components, making a complete overhaul necessary. In response, a Division Bench comprising Justice Anil Kilor and Justice Raj Wakode directed the government to submit a detailed development plan within three weeks.
The High Court has been closely monitoring the matter, which was converted into a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) following prolonged shutdowns and maintenance issues. During an earlier hearing, the court expressed concern after the Forest Department suggested that restarting the train could take up to six months.
Highlighting the importance of real-world experiences for children, the Bench remarked, “In today’s world, where children are increasingly glued to mobile phones and television screens, initiatives like the Vanbala toy train are not just entertainment—they are essential.”
Advocate Jemini Kasat appeared as amicus curiae, while Advocate N.S. Rao represented the State Government.
Beyond the Train: A Park That Inspires Curiosity and Play
The court also urged the government to go further by transforming the entire Seminary Hills area into a thoughtfully designed children’s park. The envisioned space would feature interactive, hands-on activities that promote creativity, curiosity, and physical movement, helping kids reconnect with nature and real-life experiences.
If executed as envisioned, the Vanbala revival could once again fill Seminary Hills with the laughter and excitement of children, turning it into a vibrant family destination and restoring a cherished part of Nagpur’s childhood memories.
