In a major step towards simplifying Aadhaar services, the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) will allow citizens to update or change their registered mobile numbers entirely online from January 28, 2026, doing away with the long-standing requirement of visiting physical enrolment centres.
With the rollout of the full version of its upgraded Aadhaar mobile application, UIDAI will enable Aadhaar holders to update their mobile numbers “anytime and anywhere” using their smartphones. Until now, mobile number updates were among the few Aadhaar-related services that mandated in-person visits to Aadhaar Seva Kendras for biometric verification, often leading to delays and inconvenience, particularly for people in remote areas.
The new mechanism will rely on a combination of Face Authentication and One-Time Password (OTP) verification. Using the phone’s camera, users will be able to authenticate their identity remotely, making the process paperless and centre-free.
What changes for Aadhaar users
From January 28, citizens will be able to manage several aspects of their digital identity directly through the Aadhaar app:
- Users can link a new mobile number or update an existing one without undergoing fingerprint or iris scans at enrolment centres.
- A newly introduced “Secure QR Code” feature will allow the app’s digital Aadhaar to be used for verification at hotels, airports and government offices, reducing the need to carry a physical card.
- The update places greater emphasis on the use of Virtual ID (VID), enabling authentication for services without disclosing the 12-digit Aadhaar number.
- Unlike Aadhaar Seva Kendras, which operate during fixed hours, the digital service will be available round the clock.
Broader push for digital governance
Officials said the move aligns with UIDAI’s larger vision of a “Viksit Bharat” and comes soon after the launch of “Udai”, the new Aadhaar mascot. The timing is significant, with Aadhaar authentication volumes touching nearly 231 crore transactions towards the end of 2025, highlighting the growing reliance on Aadhaar-based services.
How to update your mobile number
From January 28, Aadhaar holders can update their mobile numbers by downloading or updating the latest Aadhaar app from the Play Store or App Store, selecting the ‘Mobile Update’ option, completing face authentication, entering the new number and verifying it through an OTP. A nominal digital service fee, expected to be ₹50, will apply.
UIDAI has cautioned users to remain alert against fraudulent or fake applications. It also clarified that biometric updates, including photographs, fingerprints and iris scans for children at the ages of five and 15, will continue to require a visit to an authorised Aadhaar centre.
