In a move that has stunned music lovers across the country, singer Arijit Singh has announced that he is stepping away from playback singing and will no longer take up new assignments in the industry.
The acclaimed vocalist shared the announcement through an emotional note on Instagram, thanking listeners for their unwavering support over the years. Marking the beginning of the new year with the message, Singh expressed gratitude to his fans and described his journey as a playback singer as deeply fulfilling.
“I want to thank you all for giving me so much love all these years as listeners. I am happy to announce that I am not going to be taking any new assignments as a playback vocalist from now on. I am calling it off. It was a wonderful journey,” he wrote.
The post immediately sparked an outpouring of reactions on social media, with many fans struggling to come to terms with the announcement. While some hoped the account had been hacked, others lamented that Bollywood music would feel incomplete without his voice.
Arijit Singh rose to national prominence with Tum Hi Ho from Aashiqui 2, a song that redefined contemporary Hindi film music and established him as one of the most sought-after singers in the industry. Over the years, he delivered several chart-topping and critically acclaimed tracks, including Channa Mereya (Ae Dil Hai Mushkil), Phir Bhi Tumko Chaahunga (Half Girlfriend), and Hawayein (Jab Harry Met Sejal).
His contributions to Indian music have been widely recognised. Singh is a two-time National Film Award winner and was conferred the Padma Shri in 2025.
The singer, however, did not specify the reasons behind his decision to step away from playback singing, nor did he indicate what lies ahead. His announcement has left fans and the film industry awaiting further clarity on his future plans.
