Umbrellas transformed into vibrant works of art at the Government College of Art and Design on Sunday as students, faculty members, professional artists and art enthusiasts came together for the ‘Paint the Umbrella’ activity, a highlight of the ongoing ‘Meghrang-2026: Samvad Pavsachi’ festival.
Using umbrellas as unconventional canvases, participants expressed their interpretation of the monsoon through colourful paintings, poetry and creative designs. Themes inspired by the rainy season—including raindrops, clouds, frogs, fish, lush landscapes and lyrical verses—adorned the umbrellas, reflecting a wide range of artistic styles and perspectives.
The activity forms part of the month-long Meghrang-2026 festival, which celebrates the monsoon through a series of art-based events designed to encourage creative dialogue and public participation.
A major attraction of the festival is a group exhibition featuring works by 60 senior and emerging artists at the college’s art gallery. Organised as part of the institution’s diamond jubilee celebrations, the exhibition showcases paintings and mixed-media artworks exploring monsoon landscapes, changing skies, rural and urban life, human emotions, nature and the cultural significance of the rainy season.
The collection spans realistic and figurative works, abstract compositions and contemporary artistic experiments, offering visitors a diverse visual experience. The exhibition will remain open until August 14, from 10 am to 5.30 pm on working days.
During the event, Prof Sagar Hazare and Prof Sinkar conducted live demonstrations on umbrella painting, sharing insights into colour application, composition and artistic concept development. Their sessions attracted enthusiastic participation, especially from students and first-time artists.
The festival will continue with workshops, demonstrations, lectures and interactive sessions. Organisers said the objective is to bring together established artists, budding creators and the public, while promoting greater appreciation of visual arts.
The programme was held under the guidance of Dean Prof Dr Vishwanath Sable. Prof Avinash Gharde, Prof Yogita Kale and Prof Sinkar, along with final-year Applied Art students, assisted participants throughout the activity.
