Nagpur is set to gain another major infrastructure boost with the announcement of a new East–West Dedicated Freight Corridor (DFC) connecting Dankuni in West Bengal and Surat in Gujarat. The project was announced in the Union Budget presented in Parliament on Sunday.
The corridor is expected to greatly benefit industries and traders by providing direct rail connectivity between eastern and western India. Dankuni, a key freight hub near Kolkata, plays an important role in exports to Bangladesh, while Surat is one of Gujarat’s largest textile and trading centres.
Local trade in and around Nagpur is also expected to receive a significant boost once the project is completed, as the city will gain direct access to two major commercial hubs.
This will be the second dedicated freight corridor passing through Nagpur, the first being the North–South corridor. With both corridors intersecting here, Nagpur’s strategic importance in India’s rail network is set to increase further.
The proposed East–West corridor is expected to span around 2,052 km. Dedicated freight corridors offer several advantages over conventional rail freight, including faster movement and the ability to carry mixed goods, unlike traditional systems that often require full wagon loads of a single commodity.
