Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, playing like a seasoned pro in what was technically a boys’ match, delivered one of the most spectacular centuries in age-group cricket to lead India to their sixth Under-19 World Cup triumph.
Just a day before India begin their campaign to defend the T20 World Cup on home soil, Sooryavanshi—whose elevation to the senior team now seems inevitable—produced a dazzling batting masterclass against England in the final at Harare on Friday.
Undaunted by the enormity of the occasion, he dispatched the ball to all corners of the ground with remarkable ease. What stood out most was his ability to consistently middle the ball with precision and control. England fought valiantly but ultimately fell 100 runs short.
Batting first on a sunlit day, India knew they had to make a statement against a side boasting several match-winning batters.
They needn’t have worried: Sooryavanshi, already experienced in senior cricket across formats, tore into the English attack with a combination of power and finesse that belied his age of just 14.
His technique is exceptional—he can hit through the line while staying perfectly balanced, his hands lightning-fast, leaving bowlers of all types—pacers, spinners, and even part-timers—frustrated and second-guessing their strategies.
Each delivery seemed to have a shot mapped out: the lofted cut on the off-side, a fierce pull over mid-on, a classic leg-side pick-up in front of square, and a full-blooded drive through the covers.
By the time the carnage ended, Sooryavanshi had crafted a record-breaking 80-ball 175, with 150 of those runs coming in boundaries (15 fours and 15 sixes). Captain Ayush Mhatre also played his part with a solid 53, helping India finish at an imposing 411.
Though England attempted to stabilize, they were eventually bowled out for 311, despite a brilliant 67-ball 115 by Caleb Falconer. India’s bowlers had to exercise patience against some resilient partnerships, but the target proved insurmountable.
With the juniors keeping their date with destiny, the spotlight now shifts to the senior team to replicate the feat in the T20 World Cup next month.
No team has dominated the Under-19 World Cup quite like India, and this sixth title only reinforces their supremacy in the tournament.
