The South East Central Railway’s Nagpur division is set to remove around 150 encroachments along the 3.5-km stretch between Motibagh and Itwari to facilitate the conversion of the old British-era metre-gauge line into a broad-gauge track. Notices have already been issued to encroachers, and officials said demolition drives could begin at any time. The new broad-gauge line is expected to improve train movement and help reduce congestion in Nagpur.
At present, engines and coaches are routed through Nagpur station to reach the Motibagh shed for repairs, a journey that takes over two hours. Once the new line becomes operational, engines will be able to reach Motibagh directly in about 15 minutes, ensuring quicker maintenance and smoother rail operations.
Although the project was planned to begin last year, delays have slowed progress, and it remains to be seen how quickly the railway authorities complete the work.
