The Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) Nagpur Division will soon receive 160 newly introduced ‘Rajmata Jijau’ buses for its eight depots, strengthening the transport network in the region. Transport Minister and MSRTC Chairman Pratap Sarnaik unveiled the new fleet of BS-VI compliant buses on Sunday. The buses are expected to be introduced on roads across the state from March.Named in honour of Rajmata Jijau, the mother of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, the saffron-and-white buses will have a seating capacity of 55 passengers in a 3×2 arrangement, compared to 40 seats in the existing ‘Lalpari’ buses. MSRTC officials said the buses will improve passenger-carrying capacity and gradually replace ageing vehicles in the fleet.Divisional Controller Vinod Chaware said the new Tata and Ashok Leyland buses, each with an 11-metre chassis length, will enhance operational efficiency while meeting modern emission norms. Mechanical Engineer (Operations) Mahendrakumar Neware added that the new vehicles will be inducted in phases across the Nagpur Division.Officials also clarified that while MSRTC continues to promote green mobility, the organisation is adopting a balanced approach by maintaining a mix of electric buses and fuel-efficient BS-VI diesel buses, as diesel vehicles require less infrastructure investment and are easier to maintain at existing depots.
