Emerging as a Source of Livelihood for Women; Union Minister Nitin Gadkari Appreciates the Initiative
Water hyacinth, which once marred the beauty of Ambazari Lake, is now being transformed into attractive and durable handicrafts. Swati Dhotkar, Founder of the organisation Weed to Wealth, has turned this environmental challenge into an opportunity by reducing pollution in Ambazari Lake while simultaneously empowering women economically.

After successfully implementing this unique project independently in Chandrapur, Swati Dhotkar has now introduced the initiative at the Skill Development Centre under the Smart City Project of the Nagpur Municipal Corporation.
Under this project, water hyacinth covering nearly one acre of Ambazari Lake has been removed and processed. The stems, leaves, and roots of the plant are separated, sun-dried, and then crafted into high-quality handicraft products. So far, 100 trained women have produced more than 800 items, including laptop bags, leather bags, yoga mats, elegant purses, file folders, and laundry bags. Notably, apart from Chandrapur and Nagpur, such an innovative project is not seen anywhere else in the country.

The Nagpur Municipal Commissioner had provided space for this initiative under the Smart City Project following the suggestion of Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Shri Nitin Gadkari. Recently, Swati Dhotkar met Shri Gadkari and briefed him about the project’s progress. The Minister highly appreciated the initiative.
He expressed confidence that with proper marketing and branding, the project could gain recognition at a global level. At the same time, he stated that the initiative represents a significant step toward environmental conservation.

The project not only protects the environment but also provides local women with a new source of livelihood, marking an important step toward economic self-reliance. Through exhibitions, these eco-friendly products have been receiving an encouraging response from customers, Shri Gadkari noted.
True Environmental Conservation
Water hyacinth is one of the fastest-growing plants in the world and reduces oxygen levels in lakes, leading to the death of fish and other aquatic life. It also absorbs large quantities of water, gradually causing lakes to dry up. Simply removing and discarding the plant is only a temporary solution, as it grows back rapidly.
However, the Weed to Wealth project offers a sustainable solution to this problem. By using invasive water hyacinth as raw material for handicrafts, the natural cleanliness of lakes is restored, and waste is converted into environmentally friendly products. This initiative truly embodies the concept of “Turning Waste into Wealth.”
