The Maharashtra government led by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has officially scrapped the proposed 5% reservation for Muslims in government jobs and educational institutions through a new Government Resolution.
The quota was first introduced in 2014 by the Congress-NCP government through an ordinance, but it never became law and later lapsed after the change in power. The same ordinance had also proposed a 21% reservation for the Maratha community and was challenged for exceeding the Supreme Court’s 50% reservation limit. Earlier, the Bombay High Court had stayed the implementation of the measure.
The latest resolution formally declares the Muslim quota null and void. Opposition leaders, including Congress MP Varsha Gaikwad and All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen state chief Imtiaz Jaleel, criticised the decision, calling it unfair to the Muslim community.
