Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Sunday dismissed speculation about moving to national politics, saying he will continue to work in Maharashtra.
The clarification came a day after his brief visit to New Delhi sparked political buzz following the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. Speaking after returning to Nagpur, Fadnavis said he had no plans to shift to Delhi.
Sources said Fadnavis met Union Home Minister Amit Shah and briefed him on the NEET paper leak case and the Maharashtra government’s action. They added that the Centre is expected to introduce the Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) Amendment Bill, 2026, in Parliament to strengthen laws against exam paper leaks.
The meeting is also believed to have included discussions on Cabinet portfolio allocation among allies in the BJP-led Mahayuti government, including the NCP led by Sunetra Ajit Pawar and the Shiv Sena led by Eknath Shinde.
Fadnavis travelled to Delhi from Solapur on Saturday afternoon and returned to Nagpur the same evening after meeting senior BJP leaders.
Responding to questions about his visit, he said, “Today, I am in Nagpur and will be going to Mumbai in the evening. I am in Maharashtra only.”
He also described the proposed Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) Amendment Bill, 2026, as a first-of-its-kind law aimed at preventing examination malpractices.
Meanwhile, Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut claimed that Union Minister Pralhad Joshi’s appointment as Education Minister was temporary and alleged that Prime Minister Narendra Modi was considering Fadnavis for the post because of his educational background and RSS roots. Raut also questioned who would replace Fadnavis as Maharashtra Chief Minister if such a move were to happen.
