With Holi festivities picking up across the city, Nagpur Police have raised concerns over a growing mismatch between the high number of Holi party promotions and the very few official permissions granted for such events. Authorities fear that several unauthorised celebrations may be in the works, prompting heightened surveillance ahead of the festival.
In recent days, social media platforms have been flooded with advertisements for Holi bashes, DJ nights, rain dance events and poolside parties. However, official data suggests that only a fraction of these organisers have sought legal approval. Police sources confirmed that just eight applications seeking permission for Holi-related events have been received so far. Similarly, the State Excise Department has processed only five applications for temporary one-day liquor permits.
Senior officials said that the city’s enforcement agencies are taking the matter seriously. Special monitoring squads have been deployed to conduct surprise inspections, ensure compliance and detect any unauthorised gatherings. Authorities have reiterated that organising a public Holi event without mandatory police and excise permissions will attract strict legal action.
To maintain law and order during the festival, Nagpur Police will set up extensive checkpoints across the city to curb drunk driving and intoxicated behaviour. Patrolling will be intensified around popular celebration hubs, event venues and major traffic intersections.
Excise Department officials added that while applications for liquor permits are currently low, the number may rise as organisers typically apply closer to the event date. As per rules, any organiser planning to serve alcohol at a public event must obtain a temporary liquor permit in addition to securing police clearance.
The disconnect between widespread online promotions and limited official permissions has fueled speculation that many events may be conducted illegally. Authorities have urged citizens, event organisers, hotels and clubs to follow all legal requirements to ensure safe, lawful and incident-free Holi celebrations.
With enforcement teams on high alert and compliance checks set to intensify, officials have warned that any violations during Holi will lead to stringent action under applicable laws.
