The Supreme Court dismissed five Public Interest Litigations filed by a lawyer, including one seeking a scientific study on whether onion and garlic contain “tamasic” or negative energy. The bench led by Chief Justice Sanjiv Khanna criticized the petitions as “vague, frivolous and baseless.”
During the hearing, the court even asked the petitioner whether the pleas were drafted “in the middle of the night.” The petition had cited Jain dietary practices that avoid onion and garlic.
The court also rejected four other PILs filed by the same lawyer on issues ranging from regulation of harmful content in alcohol and tobacco to property registration transparency and classical language declarations. Judges warned that filing such poorly researched petitions in the future could lead to penalties.
