The Nag Vidarbha Chamber of Commerce (NVCC) has raised serious concerns regarding technical difficulties faced by taxpayers while complying with Profession Tax requirements on the MahaGST portal. The chamber has submitted a detailed representation to the Joint Commissioner of Profession Tax for the Nagpur Division, highlighting several operational issues affecting employers, professionals and tax practitioners across Maharashtra.
According to NVCC President Faroque Akbani, the transition to the new portal system has led to widespread technical glitches, making it difficult for taxpayers to file returns and complete tax payments smoothly despite their willingness to comply with the law.
One of the major problems reported is difficulty in accessing Profession Tax modules on the portal. Many users have stated that even after logging in successfully, their PTRC (Employer Registration) or PTEC (Professional Enrolment) registrations are not visible or appear as unmapped, preventing them from filing returns or making payments.
NVCC Treasurer Sachin Puniyani highlighted that taxpayers are also encountering issues during online payments. These include failure in challan generation, payment status not updating after successful bank transactions, and delays in the reflection of payments in the electronic ledger. In some cases, the amount has been debited from bank accounts but does not appear on the portal, causing reconciliation problems.
Professionals have also reported system errors during the final stage of return submission, including unexplained validation errors and sudden logouts that force users to restart the process. Additionally, acknowledgement receipts are often not generated even after successful filing, creating uncertainty for taxpayers regarding compliance records.
CA Ritesh Mehta, Convenor of the NVCC Indirect Committee, pointed out that users holding both PTRC and PTEC registrations are facing difficulties linking or accessing both registrations under a single login ID. Some taxpayers are also unable to locate the correct return forms or select the relevant return period on the portal.
The chamber further noted that complaints submitted to the portal helpdesk frequently remain unresolved for long periods, with responses often generic and not addressing specific issues.
In view of the widespread difficulties, NVCC has urged the Maharashtra State Tax Department to extend due dates for filing and payment of Profession Tax returns and to waive late fees or penalties arising from portal-related problems. The chamber has also requested the authorities to stabilise the portal’s technical functioning, improve helpdesk support and provide a detailed user guide for taxpayers.
Officials from the Nagpur Division have assured that the concerns raised by NVCC will be forwarded to higher authorities in the State Tax Department for further action.
