A controversy has emerged in the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) over reported expenditure of ₹16,19,280 on a mayoral oath-taking ceremony, allegedly incurred without a formal tender process. According to the complaint, the work was directly assigned to a contractor, prompting concerns regarding adherence to established procurement norms and transparency.
A detailed expenditure breakdown cited in the complaint includes ₹2.50 lakh for decoration, ₹2.56 lakh for stage setup, ₹51,271 for a red carpet, ₹32,538 for an LED wall, ₹22,500 for a generator, and around ₹34,000 for stage décor. The complainant has questioned the justification of these costs, suggesting they may be higher than standard rates.
Additional expenses included ₹4,44,915 for food arrangements for 1,500 attendees, ₹42,370 for snacks for 500 people, and ₹16,950 for tea. The scale of spending has drawn attention in the context of ongoing civic expenditure priorities.
The complainant has called for a review of the spending and urged authorities to ensure accountability. The issue has brought focus to procurement practices and financial oversight within the civic body.
