The Regional Transport Office (RTO), Nagpur (City), has launched the ‘Save Two-Wheeler Riders and Pedestrians’ campaign to curb rising road fatalities. The initiative focuses on identifying accident-prone roads and junctions while implementing targeted enforcement and infrastructure measures.
The move comes against the backdrop of alarming figures from Maharashtra, where 36,450 road accidents in 2025 resulted in 15,549 deaths, with a majority of victims being two-wheeler riders and pedestrians.
As part of the drive, the RTO under Kiran Bidkar has identified three major stretches witnessing frequent motorcycle accidents — the Wadi T-Point to Amravati Road corridor, the New Katol Naka to Katol Road stretch, and the Sai Mandir Cutting to Jaripatka Ring Road.
Additionally, three junctions have been flagged as high-risk for pedestrian accidents: Mankapur Chowk, Khobragade Chowk on Jaripatka Ring Road, and Sangharsh Nagar Chowk, where a higher number of pedestrian-related incidents have been reported.
Officials said enforcement has been intensified on these routes, with radar-equipped vehicles deployed to act against helmetless riders and traffic violations.
At the same time, infrastructure upgrades are being planned and implemented at vulnerable junctions to improve pedestrian safety. These include the construction of footpaths, installation of protective railings to prevent unsafe crossings, and marking of zebra crossings.
Authorities are also considering foot overbridges, subways, and improved traffic signal systems at key locations in coordination with the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC), Public Works Department, and National Highways Authority.
The campaign aligns with the Safe System Approach, which focuses on better road engineering, stricter enforcement, and enhanced public awareness, in line with global targets to reduce road accident deaths by 50% by 2030.
The RTO has urged citizens and motorists to follow traffic rules strictly and cooperate with authorities to improve overall road safety in Nagpur.
