With the Nagpur Municipal Corporation Zone Elections approaching, political temperatures in the city have intensified over a possible restructuring of ward “zones.” According to sources, discussions are underway to alter the composition of wards within certain zones ahead of the upcoming zonal committee elections.
The issue has gained momentum after the general body meeting held on Friday reportedly approved a proposal concerning 38 wards under zonal administrative divisions. However, the approval—allegedly granted with a “secret note”—has raised suspicions among opposition members, who claim the move could be politically motivated.
In particular, attention has turned to zones like Mangalwari and Ashinagar, where the BJP is believed to lack a clear majority. Opposition leaders suspect that changes in ward composition could be an attempt to tilt the balance of power in favour of the ruling party.
A senior corporator stated that while the proposal has been approved, it was not cleared in its original form but rather with certain undisclosed modifications. This has further fueled concerns about transparency and intent behind the decision.
As per standard procedure, zonal structures are typically finalized before elections, determining which wards fall under which zones. However, any post-election alteration in ward composition could face legal scrutiny. Experts suggest that such changes, if challenged in court, may stall the entire process.
The development has triggered intense political debate within the NMC, with opposition parties demanding clarity and accountability over the alleged “zone game” being played ahead of crucial committee elections.
