Nagpur Mayor Neeta Thakre has appealed to non-governmental organizations (NGOs) to actively participate in creating public awareness and supporting cleanliness initiatives across the city under the Nag River Cleanliness Campaign. Emphasizing the need for collective responsibility, she urged NGOs to contribute towards sensitizing citizens about maintaining cleanliness in public spaces.
A meeting with representatives of various NGOs was held today at the Dr. Punjabrao Deshmukh Standing Committee Hall to discuss strategies for public awareness and cleanliness. The meeting was chaired by Mayor Neeta Thakre and attended by Deputy Mayor Leela Hatibed, Standing Committee Chairperson Shivani Dani Wakhare, Leader of the House Narendra (Balya) Borkar, Chief Engineer Manoj Talewar, Superintending Engineer Dr. Shweta Banerjee, Chief Sanitation Officer Dr. Gajendra Mahalle, Assistant Commissioners Pramod Wankhede and Rajkumar Meshram, along with officials from all zones and Swachh Bharat Mission Nagpur Brand Ambassador Kaustuv Chatterjee. NGO representatives including Varun Metani, Leena Budhe, Kartik Sabu and others were also present.
Chief Engineer Manoj Talewar informed that the river cleaning drive covering Nag River, Pili River, and Pohra River began on March 1. A total of 16 poclain machines have been deployed, and the campaign is being executed in 11 phases to ensure comprehensive cleaning of all three rivers.
Mayor Neeta Thakre also highlighted efforts to address pollution in Ambazari Lake, stating that a Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) is being developed through Wadi Nagar Panchayat, which will process 11 million litres of wastewater. This is expected to stop the direct inflow of contaminated water into the lake. She further noted that under the support of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, five STPs are being constructed across the city under AMRUT Phase-2 and the JICA project.
She stressed that while infrastructure projects are underway, public awareness remains crucial to maintaining cleanliness. NGOs and social media influencers were urged to take proactive steps in spreading awareness and encouraging citizen participation.
