The Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has issued a public notice urging citizens to add their children’s names to existing birth registrations before the extended deadline of April 27.
Under Section 14 of the Registration of Births and Deaths Act, 1969, and Rule 10 of the Maharashtra Registration of Births and Deaths Rules, 2000, a child’s name can normally be added to the birth register only within 15 years of birth. However, many citizens continued to approach the civic body even after this limit, facing difficulties as the rules did not permit such additions.
Following a directive from the central government in 2021, a special five-year relaxation was granted to allow inclusion of names even after the 15-year limit. The Maharashtra government later issued a notification on April 28, 2021, extending the deadline for such cases up to April 27, 2026.
NMC officials have now appealed to citizens whose birth records exist but whose names are missing to complete the process before the deadline, even if they are above 15 years of age. Applicants must submit relevant documents such as school leaving certificates, SSC mark sheets or other valid proof, with the date of birth matching the one recorded in the birth register.
Officials clarified that once a name is registered, it cannot be completely changed under the Act. Birth and death certificates for cases reported in government hospitals such as Mayo, Medical and Daga since July 2023 will be issued only by the respective hospitals.
Citizens have also been warned not to approach agents or middlemen for birth, death or marriage registration work, as the department will not be responsible for any fraud or fake certificates.
