Over 33,000 Positions Unfilled in CGST Department Across In

| Working Strength | 966 |
| Vacancies | 526 |
In the CGST Nagpur Zone alone, over 526 posts remain vacant, resulting in increased workload and pressure on existing staff. To address the issue, the All India Federation of Customs, Central Excise and GST SC/ST Employees Welfare Organisations has submitted a representation to the CBIC, seeking immediate recruitment for key posts such as Inspectors, Superintendents and Tax Assistants.
According to data from the Directorate General of Human Resource Development (DGHRD), CBIC, the sanctioned strength in the CGST Nagpur Zone is 1,492, while the current working strength stands at 966, leaving 526 posts vacant.
“At present, CGST Nagpur Zone is heavily understaffed in comparison to the work load in the various departments. These vacant posts need to be filled up by the Government at the earli-est for the efficient and smooth working of CGST, Nagpur Zone,” said Sanjay Thul, President of the federation.
Thul noted that the vacancies have led to serious operational challenges, including delays in assessments, clearance of consignments, audits, anti-evasion work and revenue recovery, ultimately impacting national revenue collection.
At the national level, CBIC data shows 33,711 vacant posts out of a total sanctioned strength of 91,742, with only 58,031 personnel currently in position.
Thul said that with adequate staffing, average monthly GST collections could rise from Rs 1.50 lakh crore to Rs 2 lakh crore. “Shortage of staff is one of the main reasons for the rise in fake GST registrations and fake Input Tax Credit (ITC) claims, causing revenue loss to the Government,” he said.
“A large number of youths in our country are facing problem of unemployment and they should be given jobs in the var-revious departments which are facing acute shortage. A special recruitment drive should be taken. This would provide them stable employment and economic support to their families. They can also contribute in nation building,” he added.
