Roadside shelters planned as multi-facility hubs for passengers
In a move aimed at improving passenger convenience, the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) has planned to develop modern roadside shelters across the Nagpur region, converting them into ‘mini bus stations’. The initiative comes in response to the poor condition of several existing MSRTC bus stops, where commuters currently face inadequate facilities.
In the Nagpur division alone, 13 such shelters will be upgraded at an estimated cost of Rs 20 lakh per stop, taking the total to around Rs 2.60 crore. Designed with modern architecture, the proposed 30×8 feet structures are expected to enhance both utility and appearance.
The locations identified in Nagpur include Chhatrapati Nagar, Ravi Nagar, Wadi, Dighori, Indora, Gittikhadan, HB Town, Jagnade Chowk, Tekanaka Chowk, Automotive Chowk, Pardi, Bahadura Phata and Chinchbhuvan.
MSRTC Executive Engineer Shital Gond said the upgraded shelters will function as mini bus stations, offering multiple facilities under one roof while improving safety and commuter comfort.
Officials also stated that contractors awarded the tenders will be given advertising rights at these digital shelters. In return, they will be responsible for their maintenance and upkeep, ensuring cleanliness and smooth functioning.
Under the broader plan, similar shelters will be developed across other divisions, including Bhandara (22), Chandrapur (13), Wardha (14) and Gadchiroli (13).
The state government has sanctioned a total budget of Rs 15 crore for the project, which will be distributed among divisions based on priority. The tendering process is expected to begin soon through MSRTC’s civil engineering wing, with construction set to start after contracts are awarded.
