Residents of parts of East Nagpur continue to face severe discomfort during rains as foul odour from the Bhandewadi Dumping Yard spreads into nearby homes. Addressing the issue, corporators at an all-party meeting convened by Mayor Neeta Thakre at the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) on Monday proposed measures including installing tin sheets along the yard’s boundary wall and increasing the height of the chimney at the incinerator.
The meeting followed concerns raised during a general body session, where corporators expressed dissatisfaction over the civic administration’s response to the growing garbage mound, which poses a significant health risk. The Mayor directed officials to increase spraying at the dump site to control the stench.
Corporator Deepak Wadibhasme highlighted residents’ plight, noting that even turning on coolers brings the foul smell indoors, leaving people with no relief. Representatives from Prabhags 23, 24, 25, and 26 attended the meeting. Pradip Pohane said that efforts to reduce the garbage heap have accelerated following visits by civic leaders, and while the odour has reduced, it worsens significantly during rains.
Balu Rarokar suggested that increasing the chimney height could help disperse the polluted air more effectively. Mayor Thakre added that around 2,500 tonnes of solid waste is currently being processed at the site, and operations are expected to improve further with the upcoming SusBDe plant. The meeting was held at the Standing Committee Hall at NMC headquarters in Civil Lines.
Weed removal at Ambazari Lake
Separately, Mayor Thakre directed officials to procure high-capacity suction machines to remove water hyacinth from Ambazari Lake. The issue of excessive weed cover was also discussed during the meeting.
Officials said that weed harvester machines are currently being hired, but the existing manual process—removing, drying, and dumping the plants—is inefficient. The proposed machines are expected to speed up the removal process and improve lake maintenance.
