In a significant step towards implementing the National Education Policy 2020, the Maharashtra government has approved the introduction of the fourth year in undergraduate degree programmes (Honours and Honours with Research) across universities in the state from the academic year 2026–27.
The decision, issued by the Higher and Technical Education Department, aims to strengthen research-oriented and skill-based learning among students. With this move, Maharashtra aligns its higher education structure with the NEP framework, offering greater academic flexibility and enhanced career opportunities.
According to the government resolution, the fourth-year programme will be implemented across all public universities and autonomous colleges in the state. To ensure uniform and effective execution, detailed guidelines have also been issued.
Officials stated that the reform will open new avenues for students to engage in advanced research, innovation, and multidisciplinary learning, thereby improving the overall quality of higher education in Maharashtra.
The government has also indicated that periodic reviews will be conducted to monitor the implementation of these guidelines and ensure smooth adoption across institutions.
