The Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) successfully conducted its 39th
Convocation on April 7, 2026. The main function was held at IGNOU Headquarters, New Delhi, where
Degrees and Diplomas were conferred upon 3,24,835 learners worldwide.
At the main ceremony, Prof. Uma Kanjilal, Hon’ble Vice Chancellor of IGNOU, presented the Vice
Chancellor’s Report. The Hon’ble Vice-President of India, Shri C. P. Radhakrishnan, graced the
occasion as the Chief Guest and delivered the Convocation Address.
To reach its vast and diverse learner base, the Convocation was organized simultaneously across 55
Regional Centres, including Nagpur. At IGNOU Regional Centre Nagpur, the Convocation was held at
SHALOM Auditorium, Hislop College, Civil Lines, Nagpur.
Dr. Bhimaraya Metri, Director, Indian Institute of Management Nagpur, graced the occasion as the
Guest of Honour and delivered the Regional Convocation Address. In his address, he congratulated
the graduating learners and highlighted the significant initiatives undertaken by IGNOU for societal
development since its inception. He further emphasized that learners from the Vidarbha and
Marathwada regions are greatly benefiting from the wide range of academic programmes offered by
the University.
He also observed that India is emerging as a global brand and is expected to surpass a GDP of USD 5
trillion by 2026–27. Further, he remarked, “A leader is one who thinks the unthinkable, achieves the
unachievable, and sees the invisible.”
A total of 1,373 learners were conferred degrees during the ceremony, including two learners each
from the Nagpur and Amravati Central Prison Study Centres. The event also marked a moment of
pride and inspiration as 85-year-old Dr. Digambar Alsi successfully completed M.A. (Development
Studies), exemplifying the spirit of lifelong learning. Dr. Alsi has already completed five programmes
from IGNOU Regional Centre Nagpur. Additionally, degrees were conferred upon four Divyang
learners.
The programme was broadcast on Gyan Vani FM Radio, telecast on Gyandarshan TV Channel, and
streamed on Facebook and the IGNOU YouTube Channel.
The programme was successfully organized with the support of Coordinator Dr. Shubhajit Halder, Dr.
Mayur Khedkar, and other non-teaching staff of Hislop College and IGNOU Regional Centre Nagpur.
The Principal of Hislop College, Dr. Prashant Shelke, also extended valuable cooperation in organizing
the Convocation.
