The Nagpur Municipal Corporation’s Standing Committee approved a proposal to provide vehicles to Subject Committee Chairpersons by majority, despite strong legal objections raised by Congress corporator Abhijeet Jha. He termed the decision as being outside the legal framework and expressed sharp dissent during the meeting.
Jha argued that there is no statutory provision under the Maharashtra Municipal Corporations Act to provide such facilities, calling the proposal ultra vires and legally untenable. Referring to a 2021 resolution, he clarified it was limited to select committees and cannot be extended universally. He also pointed out that a similar proposal was rejected on July 2, 2021, citing lack of legal backing and unnecessary expenditure.
Highlighting financial concerns, Jha stated that the proposal violates the Maharashtra Government’s GR dated September 17, 2025, which mandates need-based and economical decisions. He estimated an annual burden of around Rs60 lakh for 10 vehicles, escalating to Rs3–5 crore over five years. Despite his demand for legal and financial review, the proposal was passed, raising concerns over misuse of public funds.
