Maharashtra’s taxi and rickshaw drivers will soon face new requirements. Starting May 1, all licensed drivers must know Marathi, according to cabinet minister Pratap Sarnaik.
This decision aims to improve communication between drivers and passengers across the state. “It’s essential for drivers to communicate effectively with their customers,” Sarnaik stated during a recent announcement.
The Motor Transport Department will spearhead a statewide campaign to ensure that drivers are informed about this mandate. This initiative isn’t just about understanding the language; it’s about enhancing the overall experience for everyone on the road.
Many believe this policy will help bridge gaps that sometimes exist in service quality due to language barriers. Yet, some drivers worry about how they’ll meet this requirement in such a short time frame.
The campaign is expected to provide resources and guidance, but concerns linger among those who aren’t fluent in Marathi. The government hasn’t outlined specific training programs yet, leaving many unanswered questions as the deadline approaches.
