As temperatures in Nagpur climb past 42°C, thousands of daily passengers at the city’s railway station are being denied relief from the mist cooling system — because Platform 8, where the system is installed, has been shut for nearly two to three years due to ongoing redevelopment work.
Central Railway has activated the mist cooling system at the station this summer, but with Platform 8 closed, commuters stranded on Platforms 2 and 3 — the busiest in the station — are left to bear the scorching heat with no respite.
The mist cooling system works by spraying fine water mist through high-pressure pumps fitted on platform shelters, reducing the surrounding temperature by 6 to 8 degrees Celsius and also cutting down dust and airborne particles.
Nagpur station handles around 283 trains daily, with peak summer crowds running into lakhs of passengers. Daily passengers, including senior citizens and families with children, are forced to wait in open, unshaded areas for extended periods. Passenger associations and traveller bodies have demanded that Central Railway either extend mist cooling infrastructure to all operational platforms or provide temporary cooling arrangements on an urgent basis until the redevelopment project reaches completion.
