In a move to provide affordable, safe, and clean drinking water to citizens, the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) is set to launch a pilot project to install high-tech ‘Water ATMs’ at two of the city’s busiest transit points — Mor Bhavan Bus Stand and Panchasheel Square.
The initiative, conceptualised by Municipal Commissioner Dr. Vipin Itankar, aims to combine essential public services with modern technology. The selected locations have been chosen strategically due to their high footfall. Panchasheel Square is a key hub with a concentration of private hospitals, while Mor Bhavan serves as a major centre for bus commuters.
As per the Expression of Interest (EOI) floated by the District Planning and Development Committee (DPDC) Cell, each unit will be equipped with an advanced water purification system using RO+UF technology. The kiosks will be set up in prefabricated structures measuring 4.0 m x 5.0 m and will have a purification capacity of 1,000 litres per hour. The facilities will include RFID-based dispensing systems for automated access, water ATMs, chilling plants to provide cold water, and a 5,000-litre raw water storage tank.
Additionally, the units will feature remote monitoring systems with SIM-based control panels to enable real-time supervision, as detailed in the NMC’s EOI advertisement inviting contractors.
