A devastating gas cylinder explosion rocked the Gandhinagar Bhaji Mandi area in Kamptee on Sunday morning, leaving one person dead and around 10 others injured. The deceased has been identified as Atul alias Bunty Panatwane (40). According to Old Kamptee Police, the incident occurred due to a gas leak in the kitchen that triggered a fire, followed by a powerful cylinder blast.
As per preliminary information, Panatwane’s wife had entered the kitchen to prepare tea when the gas leak caught fire. Within moments, the cylinder exploded, causing flames to engulf the entire house. While his wife and children managed to escape in time, Atul Panatwane got trapped inside a bedroom and died of suffocation.
The fire rapidly spread throughout the house, destroying essential household items including gold ornaments, a television, refrigerator, clothes, and other belongings. The total loss is estimated to be around ₹5 lakh.
During efforts to control the blaze, Vinay Panatwane, Nitin Panatwane, and a neighbour, Sandhya Dhawale, along with others, sustained minor injuries. All the injured were treated at a nearby hospital. Fire brigade teams rushed to the spot and managed to bring the fire under control, but not before significant damage had occurred.
Police officials, including Senior Police Inspector Prashant Jumde and Assistant Police Inspector Manish Hiwarkar, visited the site. The body has been sent to Kamptee Sub-District Hospital for post-mortem, and further investigation is underway.
Meanwhile, local residents have demanded financial assistance from the government for the victim’s family.
