Every morning, before traffic builds up, a few cyclists take to the quiet roads, a reminder of cleaner air and a healthier way of life. But as the city wakes, congestion and speeding vehicles take over, reflecting an urban system built largely for motor traffic.
With rising fuel use and lifestyle diseases, cycling is gaining attention as a practical, low-cost, and eco-friendly alternative. However, lack of safe infrastructure, dedicated lanes, and proper planning makes daily cycling difficult and risky.
In Nagpur, cyclists are now pushing for change. A signature campaign led by Amit Samarth highlights the need for better urban planning. “Our proposal includes integrating continuous cycling lanes into road networks, introducing traffic-calming measures to reduce vehicle speeds, and creating pedestrian-friendly spaces that encourage non-motorised movement,” he said.
Cyclists also stress the need for dedicated corridors and a shift in mindset to make cycling a regular part of daily life.
