The busy stretch between the Manish Nagar underpass and the start of the Manish Nagar flyover has been plunged into darkness due to partially defunct streetlights, raising serious safety concerns among commuters.
The problem is more alarming given the narrow road and heavy traffic flow, making movement difficult and risky, especially after sunset.
Motorists and pedestrians are facing major visibility issues. With several streetlights not working or flickering, the stretch has become prone to sudden braking, near-miss incidents, and traffic slowdowns. Two-wheeler riders, in particular, are struggling to assess road conditions, increasing accident risks.
Residents have expressed strong dissatisfaction. “This road is already narrow and busy. Driving here at night feels unsafe because you simply can’t see what’s ahead,” said daily commuter Nikhil Chouhan.
Another resident, Bhushan Khante, said, “Without proper lighting, it becomes extremely dangerous, especially when someone comes from the wrong side and flashes headlights in our eyes.”
Pedestrians are also finding it difficult to cross safely. “We have to rely on vehicle headlights to cross the road. It’s risky, especially for elderly people and children,” said local resident Amol Choughule. Some residents also pointed out that rash driving continues despite poor lighting, worsening the situation.
The lack of proper illumination is not only affecting traffic flow but also raising concerns over basic road safety standards. Citizens say such issues undermine urban infrastructure efforts and highlight poor maintenance.
When contacted, a source from the Nagpur Municipal Corporation’s electrical department acknowledged the problem and assured prompt action. “The faulty streetlights will be repaired at the earliest. We will also investigate the root cause behind the repeated failures to ensure a long-term solution,” the official said.
