With the aim of streamlining property tax collection and making the system more citizen-friendly, the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has been directed to prepare and implement a 100-day action plan focused on reforms, accurate taxpayer data, and improved recovery.
The directive was issued by Standing Committee chairperson Shivani Dani-Wakhare during a meeting of the Tax Assessment and Collection Special Committee on Monday, chaired by Sarita Kawre and attended by officials and elected representatives. Dani-Wakhare emphasised the need to update property tax records with correct addresses and mobile numbers to ensure smooth communication and ease for citizens.
Kawre instructed that a comprehensive survey of hotels, hospitals, and commercial properties be completed within 30 days, warning of strict action in cases of tax evasion. She also ordered an audit of properties listed as residential but being used for commercial purposes, and sought details of the top 25 defaulters for the next meeting.
All zones have been asked to explain poor recovery and submit improvement plans. A preliminary progress report must be submitted within 15 days, followed by an Action Taken Report (ATR) in the next meeting. Kawre also directed that 112 tax department staff currently deployed elsewhere be brought back to strengthen recovery efforts.
Deputy Municipal Commissioner (Tax) Milind Meshram informed that agencies will be appointed at the zonal level to distribute demand notices, with real-time updates including date-stamped photographs to be uploaded into the system.
