Panic gripped the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) headquarters on Tuesday afternoon after a lift malfunction left around 10 people trapped for nearly 30 minutes near the fifth floor. The incident occurred around 3.30 pm following a sudden power outage, while the backup generator reportedly also failed, worsening the situation. Those stuck inside the lift were left sweating and anxious before a fire brigade team reached the spot and safely rescued all occupants.
The incident has raised serious concerns over safety infrastructure and maintenance systems at the civic headquarters. Reacting strongly, Corporator and Standing Committee member Abhijeet Jha rushed to the spot, reviewed the situation with officials and demanded an immediate safety audit of all lifts in NMC buildings, inspection of the backup power system and a high-level inquiry into the lapse. He also called for replacing ageing systems with new upgraded high-tech lifts equipped with emergency rescue mode, power backup and advanced safety features to prevent such risks in the future.
“This is not just a technical glitch but a serious safety issue. Temporary repairs are not enough. To avoid such incidents in future, modern high-tech lifts with advanced emergency systems must be installed immediately,” Jha said, while stressing accountability and urgent corrective action.
